St. Joseph Book Club * 2007-2008

Saint Joseph Book Club will meet on Tuesday, December 18 at 7:00 PM to discuss Silence by Shusaku Endo, Japan's foremost novelist.  Silence, regarded as his masterpiece, tells the story of a pair of seventeenth-century Portuguese priest in Japan at the height of  the fearful persecution of the small Japanese Christian community.  The Japanese government (the Tokugawa  Bakufu) fearing foreign influence closed Japan to the outside world and attempted to eliminate Christianity by forcing the Christians to apostatize.  The book brings up issues of faith and human failings and weaknesses in the face of death in a dramatic and unforgettable manner.  Please join us for a discussion of this important book.  If you haven't had a chance to read the book, come anyway and listen.  You might decide to join the book club.

Harry Wade, Moderator

St. Joseph Book Club meets monthly on the third Tuesday of each month in the St. Joseph Community Center (1504 Cooper St.) at 7:00 PM and end at 8:30.  While the book club will focus on Catholic writers, those of other faiths are welcome to join.  Besides informing others of our faith, interfaith dialogue should lead to better understanding and mutual respect among Christians.

The book club has only three requirements: first, to read the book (a month between meetings should be sufficient time); second, to respect everyone’s opinions; and third, to participate in but not dominate the discussions.

The reading selections for 2007-2008 are:

  • Feb. 19 The Word, Church and Sacraments in Protestantism and Catholicism, Louis Bouyer.
  • Mar. 18   Apocalypse: A Catholic Perspective on the Book of Revelation, Stephen C. Doyle.
  • April 12   Science and Religion: From Conflict to Conversation, John F. Haught.
  • May 20    Crossing the Desert, Robert J. Wicks.
  • All of the above books are currently in a paperback printing and easily available from either Amazon.com or directly from the publisher.  Most of the books cost about $10 on Amazon, but they also have used books for less.  For further information contact Harry Wade at 903 886-8886 or Harry_Wade@tamu-commerce.edu
